A chronic cough, which can be voluntary or involuntary, is a repetitively occurring reflex which helps clear the large breathing passages from secretions, irritants, foreign particles and invading viruses or bacteria. In most cases, irregular coughing is caused by a respiratory tract infection, but can also be triggered by choking, smoking, air pollution, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), post nasal drip, chronic bronchitis and other conditions such as medications (ACE inhibitors used to treat hypertension).
