ACID REFLUX (LPR)
The effects of acid reflux or laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) are well known and include heartburn, indigestion, swallowing problems, esophageal strictures and tumors. In many patients, reflux symptoms occur mainly in the throat. These symptoms include sore throat, a sensation of a lump or tightness in the throat, difficulty swallowing chronic cough and hoarseness.
The condition is easily diagnosed by examining the throat with an instrument called a laryngoscope for the typical signs of LPR which include redness and swelling in the lower throat. LPR can also be confirmed by testing the pH of the throat over a 24 hour period. Both of these procedures are done in the office.
Once the diagnosis is made, the conditions is easily treated with diet and behavior modification along with medications to control gastric acid production.
