Sinus headaches are not as common as most people think and are frequently confused with muscle tension headaches and migraine headaches. Headaches specifically occur in the location of the sinus that is involved, usually in the cheeks, orbits or just above the eyes. They are usually unilateral. On rare occasions they may localize to the top of the head or the back of the head.
Sinus headaches are usually described as throbbing and tend to be worse in the morning and when bending over. They may present as pain in the upper jaw area. In some cases, percussion of the sinus producing pain can be associated with a sinus headache. Some headaches can be triggered by changes in atmospheric pressure especially while flying.
In order to determine if a headache is of sinus origin, a CAT scan of the sinuses is necessary. If sinus disease is found, appropriate treatment should be initiated.
